HISTORY OF COFFEE
Arabica coffee is grown in Brazil and in other countries of South America. In particular, Brazil is the world’s largest Arabica producer. Colombia is the second largest Arabica coffee producer in the world, and it produces high quality Arabica. Although Vietnam produces mainly Robusta, but Vietnam have Arabica coffee varieties which considered most delicious in the world.
Arabica is grown only in the region with high altitude, climate and soil suitable for the development of this variety. So, even though Vietnam has over 630.000ha of land growing coffee, only a few regions can meet this requirement.
1. Arabica coffee at Cau Dat, Da Lat:
The Cau Dat area of Da Lat, Lam Dong is naturally blessed. Cau Dat Arabica is very high quality and is known as the Queen of Vietnamese coffee, which is the most delicious Arabica coffee in the world. In addition, the first coffee varieties were grown in Cau Dat like Yellow Bourbon and Typica which sparks interest among many connoisseurs.
Arabica coffee flavor is described as follows: acidic and slightly bitter, which creates an elegant and noble coffee with a light amber brown color.
The quality of Arabica increases as the altitude increases, and the temperature drops. With an altitude of over 1,600m above sea level, along with a cold climate and foggy weather most of the year, Cau Dat, Da Lat is a paradise for Arabica coffee plants. Along with that, is the meticulously picking and pruning process. They pick only the ripe beans when ready, and do pick ripe along with green beans.
The coffee growing area in Cau Dat is about 1,100ha.
2. Arabica coffee at Khe Sanh, Quang Tri:
At Huong Hoa, Quang Tri there is about 5,000ha of coffee growing land under the brand Khe Sanh.
This place is 350-500m above than sea level. Khe Sanh was chosen by Vietnam Coffee Cacao association to test the premium coffee production model with a strong desire in high quality. Khe Sanh has since then turned into a center of coffee cultivation and production in the Central.
In Huong Hoa, local people are becoming aware of the Khe Sanh coffee brand and are beginning to enjoy their coffee more.
Along with that, consumer habits are gradually shifting into pure coffee, not mixed.
In 2012, the export value of Khe Sanh Arabica coffee reached 25 million USD, and they are hoping to export directly into the US market.
3. Arabica coffee at West North of Vietnam:
At West North region, Son La province and Dien Bien province have suitable soil and an ideal climate to grow Arabica coffee. By the end of 2011, the total growing area was nearly 9,000ha and is planned to be 16,000ha by 2020.
Arabica quality in this region is low compared to other regions due to the way people cultivate and produce from seedlings, care until harvest and sell to the market. Therefore, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs of Son La and Dien Bien is gradually planning a system to guide farmers on how to increase the quality and production of coffee of West North of Vietnam.
