These milestones show the growth of coffee over time.

850: A curious shepherd discovered coffee plant and claim this is wonderful beverage.

In the middle 800s: Muslim people at Aden was acknowledged as early coffee drinker.

1000: The philosopher and physician Avicenna Bukhara has recorded the first of his findings about the healing effects of coffee beans.

1100: The Arab traders brought coffee seeds from Yemen, Ethiopia on their homeland. Then they planted coffee plantations and created some popular beverages throughout the region.

1453: The Turkish Ottoman brought coffee to Constantinople and began adding flavors to it. These recipes are still handed down to this day in Istanbul.

1475: Coffee became widely popular in Constantinople and became a part of Turkish culture, to the extent that a woman was permitted to divorce her husband if he did not provide enough coffee for her.

Late 15th century: Coffee, as we know it today, was invented (people started to roast coffee beans to make beverages).

1511: Khair Beg, the king of Muslims in the land of Mecca, banned coffee thinking that coffee caused objections against the rules he set out. As a result, he was murdered by the Sultan. Afterwards, coffee became a very popular drink in the Muslim world.

1570: Along with tobacco, coffee first appeared in Venice in the form of traded goods between rich merchants, or sometimes, sold in expensive beverage shops for medical purposes.

1600: Western countries were introduced to coffee by Italian merchants.

1645: The first coffee shop of Italy was opened in Venice.

1650: Coffee became widely loved in India.

1652: In London coffee shops respectively appeared.

1669: Coffee became popular in Europe.

1672: The first coffee shop of France was opened.

1675: In London, coffee was at the center of war between both sexes. Women said men love coffee too much, while the men declared that coffee made them stronger, especially in sexual performance.

1690: The people of the Netherlands became the first businessmen to trade and cultivate coffee as a commodity, in Ceylon and Java.

1668: Coffee became the favorite breakfast drink in New York City displacing beer.

1683: A Polish man named Franz recorded great achievements during the siege of Turkish troops in the city of Vienna, Austria. His reward was 500 sacks of green coffee beans left by the Turkish troops on the battlefield. He took advantage of this booty to open the first coffee shop in Vienna and had great success.

1686: Cafe Procope opened in Paris. This was a frequently visited place by Voltaire and later, Napoleon Bonaparte. This shop remains open until this day.

1697: Captain John Smith introduced coffee to North American markets.

1700: The Netherlands and French conquered and colonized the islands of Java and Martinique and started planting coffee there. Most coffee that we plant today is the same as Arabica coffee originating from Ethiopia via Yemen.

1710: Coffee plants were brought to Europe and planted in gardens.

1714: Coffee officially appeared in the US.

1721: The first Germany coffeehouse opened in Berlin.

1732: Johann Sebastian Bach composed the Kanata coffee (Coffee Canata).

1773: Drinking coffee was considered a “national duty” for every American citizen.

Late 18th century: Coffee was planted throughout tropical countries.

1822: The first espresso machine was invented in France by Louis Bernard Rabaut, an engineer.

1825: Coffee appeared in Hawaii.

1857: A Frenchman who belonged to the Catholic church imported coffee to Vietnam.

1865: James Nason invented the coffee filter.

1887: Coffee appeared in Indonesia.

1896: Coffee was introduced to Australians.

Early 1900s: Drinking coffee at lunch time became “mandatory” in Germany.

1901: Luigi Bezzera invented the extraction of the coffee flavor.

1903: Ludwig Roselius and Karl Wimmer of Germany extracted caffeine from coffee beans.

1906: Instant coffee was invented.

1908: Melitta Benz invented the paper coffee filter.

1938: Nescafe (freeze-dried coffee) was invented.

1942: During WWII, American soldiers received instant Maxwell House coffee in their ration kits.

1971: Starbucks opened its first store.

Since then, coffee has become a popular drink around the world.
